L3Harris integrates Overwatch Imaging ASO software with WESCAM MX-Series systems

Collaboration addresses increasing demand for innovative and agile solutions that can be deployed rapidly

December 17, 2024: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hood River, Oregon: Overwatch Imaging is proud to announce the commercial integration and availability of its Automated Sensor Operator (ASO) software with L3Harris’ industry-leading WESCAM MX-Series electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems.

L3Harris recently announced the collaboration as part of a two-day demonstration of its WESCAM MX™-15 and WESCAM MX™-10 systems integrated with Overwatch’s Automated Sensor Operator (ASO) software (also compatible with MX™-20 system).

The integration of ASO by L3Harris marks a significant step forward in deploying AI-enabled solutions to improve situational awareness, reduce operator workload and increase operational capabilities for a wide range of time-critical airborne intelligence missions.

L3Harris’ WESCAM MX-Series EO/IR systems incorporate battle-proven imaging technology designed to operate in extreme temperatures, at excessive speed and varying altitudes, and within the harshest environments across domains. ASO software can integrate across WESCAM MX-Series products and complements their capabilities by providing automated data collection and analysis and real-time delivery of actionable intelligence.

“We’re excited to see L3Harris recognize our ASO software as an important tactical enabler for their customers,” said Greg Davis, founder and CEO of Overwatch Imaging. “By combining our AI-powered automation capabilities with L3Harris’ WESCAM advanced sensor systems at the edge, we’re enabling customers to overcome key challenges of complex intelligence missions with greater precision, efficiency, and reliability, while reducing strain on over-tasked sensor operators.”

The powerful sensor-software combination addresses critical needs to leverage automation to improve efficiencies and mission outcomes in defense, civil and commercial applications, including threat detection and small object search in large areas and challenging visual environments.

“L3Harris has access to the best technology and capability partners in the world, and we are honored that they selected us for this role,” added Davis. “We look forward to continuing to work together to bring next-generation AI-enabled solutions to missions that matter and to support our customers with the tools they need to succeed.”

Overwatch Imaging's interactive User Interface allows operators to rapidly define large areas for the system to automatically search. ASO automates sensor steering, data collection and real-time data analysis. Geolocated image chips of detections are displayed in real time and for review.

The collaboration between Overwatch Imaging and L3Harris highlights the impact of innovative partnerships in the defense technology ecosystem. The relationship, fostered through a strategic partnership with venture capital firm Shield Capital, underscores Overwatch Imaging’s commitment to accelerating the development and deployment of cutting-edge solutions for customers facing ever-evolving challenges. It also serves as an example of L3Harris’ role as the Trusted Disruptor in the defense industry and aims to address customers’ increasing demand for innovative and agile solutions that can be deployed rapidly.

In addition to automated object detection, classification and wide-area search, ASO enhances tactical mission outcomes with real-time mapping capabilities that have, until now, not been achievable with video-based systems.

“Our collaboration with Overwatch Imaging integrates AI/ML with L3Harris’ proven technologies to drive smarter, faster and more adaptive solutions,” said Pat O’Reilly, VP, Venture Tech Disruption, L3Harris. “We’ll be able to address complex challenges faced by both commercial and Department of Defense customers by enhancing their operational capabilities.”

“Collaborating with innovative companies from across the defense technology ecosystem is at the heart of our strategy to disrupt our industry and accelerate delivery of proven capabilities into the hands of our warfighters,” said O’Reilly. “Together, the L3Harris and Overwatch Imaging teams will be well-positioned to deliver next-generation, AI-enabled solutions to meet our customers’ needs with efficiency and reliability.”
